Secretary of State Hillary Clinton released the 2011 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, which examines the status of human rights in countries around the world. She also denounced Syria's government calling the Assad regime an "assault on the very lives of its citizens" and noting that the Syrian people "know they deserve a better." Michael Posner took questions from reporters following Secretary Clinton's remarks.

Derivatives Market Regulation and Oversight

Mary Schapiro and Gary Gensler testified on the derivatives market and the ongoing implementation of the Dodd-Frank 2010 financial regulations law. Much of the hearing focused on JPMorgan Chase's recent $2 billion trading loss, which Chairs Schapiro and Gensler said they heard about via media reports. Chair Schapiro said that according to preliminary investigation, JPMorgan Chases losses happened out of the U.S.; therefore, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had no oversight or knowledge. She added that if Dodd-Frank had been fully implemented, regulators could have spotted the loss.

Q&A with Robert Caro, Part 2

Robert Caro discussed his newly-released fourth volume of his biography of former President Johnson, [The Years of Lyndon Johnson: The Passage of Power]. The fourth book covers 1958 until early 1964. Mr. Caro said that President Johnson sought the presidency, yet the nomination went to John F. Kennedy. He detailed Vice President Johnson's poor treatment at the hands of Kennedy staff, and his acrimonious relationship with Robert F. Kennedy. He described President Johnson's leadership following President Kennedy's assassination, and his skill at moving several major pieces of legislation through the House and Senate after he became president, which Mr. Caro suggests planted the seeds for President Johnson's "War on Poverty" program.

Robert Caro was born and raised in New York City and graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Science degree in English. He won Pulitzer Prizes for biography in 1975 and 2003, and has been researching Lyndon Johnson since 1977.
